Description

This image is part of my "artivism" project of artworks made with nonreworked pieces of plastic waste I collect on the shores of Lake Leman, Switzerland. As a committed activist, I use my creations to raise public awareness on the socio-ecological issues related to waste and consumption in an unusual and creative way.

I have been involved for several years in cleaning actions in nature, mainly on the shores of the Grangettes Nature Reserve located in Noville on Lake Leman (Lake Geneva). Each year, brought by the River Rhone and the currents of the lake, several tens of tons of waste, mostly plastic, end up on these shores almost all located in an integral reserve of national and international importance for water and migratory birds (Ramsar site). The origins of waste are multiple: littering, water treatment plants, construction sites, industrial and agricultural sectors, etc. We find a lot of microplastic waste, which is difficult to clean because it is in certain areas mixed with the soil on a good depth. Microplastic waste is very harmful to wildlife as it can be ingested by animals who confuse them with their food. In addition, plastic acts as a magnet, attracting toxic substances in the natural environment. These substances enter the animal and human food chain.

Modern society faces a paradox between the will to eradicate and the omnipresence of waste, which floats between oblivion and memory. Through my creations, I aim to explore the complex relationship between waste and the natural environment as well as to change the status and give back a function to the waste, this abandoned object become undesirable and having lost its values.

Most of the waste found on the shores of Lake Leman and on around the world are single-use plastics. The only real solution to stop our waste to be found in nature is to drastically reduce our production and consumption of plastic at the source.
